Murder on Blood Highway
“What are you doing?” her speech was slurred and she had trouble keeping her head up.
He didn’t answer; he stood staring at her. Almost as if on cue, the clouds parted, and a full moon shone down on her making the snowflakes in her black hair look like glistening crystals. His eyes raked over her body, and he felt himself begin to be aroused. Her dark nipples were hard from the cold, and her body trembled slightly causing the tree limbs to dance.
The cold served another purpose as she became more conscious of where she was and what was happening. She repeated her question. “What are you doing?”
He turned without answering and walked back to the truck leaving large barefoot prints in the rapidly deepening snow.
“Hey!” Maribel shouted. “Let me loose you fuck.” As he returned, she was relieved to see a large hunting knife in his hand. “You asshole.” Her teeth were chattering now and she felt as though her bladder would burst. He stopped a few feet in front of her. Something about the way he stood made her nervous. She was aware of his arousal. “If you want to have sex, let’s get in the truck.” Her voice shook.
A smile touched the corners of his mouth. He began to slowly stroke himself. Maribel struggled against her bonds, desperate to free herself from the ropes. All she succeeded in doing was tearing at her flesh; the pain made more intense by the cold.
He moved closer until he was directly in front of her, his breath mingling with hers to make frosty balloons in the dark. She locked her eyes with his. Was he going to free her or try to rape her in this awkward position? He bent forward until his mouth was level with her breast, then suddenly he locked his teeth on her stiff nipple and tossing his head from side to side, he bit it off. Her screams seemed to bounce off the trees, the snow, the earth, and the sky. Straightening he let her see the bloody piece of flesh between his teeth before spitting it into the night.

A collection of short stories and poems by the
Seductress of Suspense, Elizabeth Horton-Newton
Just one of the short stories in this dark collection from
The Seductress of Suspense
The Thin Place
“A thin place is a place of energy; a place where the veil between this world and the eternal world is thin. A thin place is where one can walk in two worlds-the worlds are fused together, knitted loosely where the differences can be discerned or tightly where the two worlds become one.”
Moira gazed out at the mist curling like a long gray cat’s tail around the bottoms of trees and the bases of fence posts. The entire day had been strange, the air charged with electric energy. As the sun set and the odor of supper cooking wafted through the house, Moira found herself looking anxiously at the clock. Sean had promised to be home early so they could get to the wake. He was already half an hour past the time he usually got home. Dark had crept upon the house until the light within struggled against the pressing night outside.
Why the Dragonfly?
The dragonfly, in almost every part of the world, symbolizes change, and change in the perspective of self realization; the kind of change that has its source in mental and emotional maturity and the understanding of the deeper meaning of life.
The traditional association of Dragonflies with water also gives rise to the meaning of this amazing insect. The Dragonfly’s scurrying flight across water represents an act of going beyond what’s on the surface and looking into the deeper implications and aspects of life.
Dragonfly Books provides authors with the realization of seeing their books published. We also provide readers with books that entertain and offer visions born in the imaginations of writers.
Our goal is simple. Give authors a voice and give readers the pleasure of a story. We look forward to sharing our discoveries with you. We encourage readers to leave reviews for the books they read. Indie writers love to read your opinions of their work.
